Work Experience Learning and School Learning

There's often a seeming dichotomy between "the real world" and school. Now that you've experienced your first placement consider the learning in both and the transference.

1.) How is the learning on your work placement different from the learning in a school setting?

2.) What did you learn on your work placement that you bring back with you into school?

3.) What have you learnt through your formal schooling that you brought into your work placement?

4.) What have you "taken away" from work experience?

Remember, when commenting, respond in complete sentences to all 4 questions. Please edit. This is a public forum, what you say, and how you say it matter!

  1. 1 Learning in my placement is totally different from school because it is more hands on. It deals with things in a more realistic way. Finally It show's you how things work in reality rather than from an old, mucky tattered book.

2 What I have learned from my placement is determination and confidence in ones self. I learned that as a person and as a young adult I have to be competitive in an ever increasing race of a world and in order to keep my sanity, I have to maintain my drive and confidence.

3 Honestly In my opinion I feel that I haven't brought much from what I've learned from from formal education into the workplace. Besides compulsive subjects I've learned in school such as math, reading and writing I was on my own and absorbed traits and qualities that my workplace radiated.

4 What I have taken away from my experience is that everyone has their own story. All people have their own pain and suffering and sometimes we can't help them.

  2. 1) learning at my work placement is different from learning at school because it is more hands on learning rather than learning by reading a textbook or powerpoint notes. for me, learning at my placement was by talking to the co-workers and asking questions, also looking at the paperwork of the animals. also learning at school is by reading a textbook and trying to memorize the information, where as learning at the pet store was by constantly looking at the paperwork to answer questions of customers. so for us to look at it constantly it would automatically be stuck in our heads.

    2) what i learnt at my work placement that i could bring back to school with me was to always make the right choices and choose the best way to solve problems. and always make the best choice for you and others around you for now and the future.

    3) what i learnt from school that i took with me to my placement was to get along with others and to always involve myself with teamwork. also in general to always respect everyone even if they can be a pain to handle. so basically if you want respect and love ... give it to get it!

    4) One thing i have taken away from my placement is that teamwork is a huge thing! to do things with other members is great because it allows you to get along and interact with them more and also helps get the job done in minutes and is also more enjoyable.

    1. Team work is so critical. I know in school we do group work and sometimes group members let you down and it's stressful, but in your vets office, if someone "dropped the ball" then it was putting animals' care and comfort at risk.

  3. Learning in your work placement is more doing it yourself and figuring things out rather than having a teacher explain something to you step by step. Also at school you kind of just sit at a desk and do your own thing, at work you need to talk to people and you need to ask your co-workers yourself for help. You can also get co-workers to input ideas and ways to figure things out. Something that I learned at work placement that I am planning on using at school is keeping track of time. You are responsible for getting places on time, nobodies going to follow you or ring a bell to let you know that you have to move on to the next task now. Something that I learned at school that I took to work placement was my skills to talk to people. What I have taken away from work placement is that I have learned that you can never please people as a customer service person, and you are going to have to learn how to deal with it.

    1. Do you think school enables students to be less responsible? In the real world there's no one chasing you with a bell. You arrived every shift down town on time, but today the very first English class you walked in late.

Customer service is a hard gig, but you did well with it.

  5. 1) It wasn't really different because I was still at a school so it was in the same setting. Instead of learning schoolwork I was learning how to be the teacher.

    2) I learnt how stressful it is for a teacher with all the marking and getting everything together so now I understand how stressful it is for my teachers to get everything together. Like I have been in there position.

    3) I was taught how to be a good student and the proper rolls of being a student and how to behave. So when I was the teacher I had to teach them the proper rolls of behaving and such.

4)I don't know what I have " Taken Away" from my work experience.

    1. I noticed today that Keesha hadn't listened to instructions and you pointed that out to her, pointing out her "being ready to learn" behaviour. It was interesting.

So no take aways? Do you still want to be a teacher? Elementary still feel like a good fit or do you think older, or younger (primary grades)?

    1) The difference between learning in a school environment and learning in a work experience placement is a lot actually. In a school the information is taught to you, you have to sit there and absorbed the information. In a work experience placement you learn things through experience. Nothing is really taught to you , you have to work and try new things to learn more about your placement.

2)There was a lot of knowledge gained over this work experience. The knowledge I brought back was being able to handle different situations better. I learned how to deal with things in a proper manner. I also learned how to deal with difficult people. This knowledge that I've gained will definitely help me in the future and in school.

3)Ever since elementary school we have been taught how to treat people with more authority. I would treat my employer with the same respect that I would treat any of my other teachers.

4)The knowledge that I have"taken away" from my work experience is that a lot of people in our area go to desperate measures just to do unnecessary things. For example I would witness just about everyday men that looked like they had families just getting plain out drunk at the bus loop! They would get so drunk they couldn't even walk, sometimes the would just throw up! It just shows how people have no shame now in days.

  7. 1. Learning on my workplace is very different from learning at school. Learning at school is more boring because we have to sit in a class for so long with little interaction with everyone and we also have to learn one thing . Learning at my workplace is fun because we get to interact with more people and learn about more than one thing and we learn little things in a slow pace and constantly.

    2. I learnt many computer skills that are very helpful and how to deal with angry, frustrated people is what I have brought to school with me. For example, now I will always have a positive attitude. ☺ If you are angry with an angry person it just gets worst.

    3. I learnt many formal skills from schooling. I learned and took a positive attitude with me and also took how to deal with phone calls, angry customers, and basic computer skills with me. I took world host skills with me and proved my schooling.

    4. I have taken away my awesome skills and myself away from the workplace. I also took away my positive attitude and my humor at lunchtime.

    I miss them so much!

  8. 1) Learning on my work experience, was totally different because instead of being a student I was the teacher! However even though I was teaching I learned that working with energy filled kids takes a lot of patience and caring!

    2) Like I said i think I have gained way more patience while doing anything. Being around kids totally makes you crazy especially when they do not understand things. So in order for me to do things properly I needed to have patience and help them along slowly.

3)From formal schooling I brought with me basic schooling skills like reading and writing. If I did not know how to do those I could not have done my work experience and been able to help students. Especially when they are learning the basics themselves. It was great to help them learn things that I have already experienced and learned. They also took everything in better because we are closer to age then the teachers.

    4) From my placement I have taken away not only a great experience but as well as two references and a possible job after high school. I would have never of been able to receive such things without this placement. I also took away a better respect for teachers as I saw how early they started and the things they have to do in order to educate their students.

  9. 1. Learning at my work experience is different than school by you need to do the task physically to understand it. You won't learn how to hold down animal just by watching, you would need to be involved and participate in the activity. Also, you need to be a quick learner.

    2. What I learned throughout my placement was how much of struggle and how many obstacles the doctors had to overcome to get to their position today. This made me realize that the only way I can reach my goal is moving through the obstacle, rather than giving up. I need to remain discipline and focus on my goals.

    3. I brought my knowledge of somewhat knowing how the body of a living creature functions and tried my best to contribute to the doctors conversations. Everything else was basic common sense, you either have it or you don't, it is not something you can take with you.

    4. The only thing I took away from my work experience is you need to be determined on your goals. Life will keep throwing obstacles at you and the only way to pass them would be to take them head on.

    1. Being aware of the "mountains you must climb" and "dragons you must slay" to reach your goals is an important take away. Determination is more precious than gold, and harder to come by.

  10. Learning on my work placement is directly related to experience. When you come across a hurdle and you don't know how to do something, you will ask a coworker for help, from which you will learn. You will also learn by making mistakes. With more experience, you will take on more responsibility, which leads to more learning. At school, you learn by being taught. You are given information, as opposed to the workplace, where you learn on your own.

At my workplace, I learned organization. All the paperwork had to be organized, or else there would be chaos in the office. This would apply to organizing schoolwork in my binders. I also became more experienced in Excel, which could help in some projects I do for school.

At school, I learned to be committed to tasks, like projects, and complete them well. I applied this to assignments that I was given by my supervisor. I also learned punctuality which is important in the workplace.

I learned a lot about the field of accounting from my work experience. I am more prepared now and I know what to expect when I pursue this career. I got some nice pointers from my coworkers who are experienced in this field.

    1. In many ways organization and punctuality may seem like common sense, but really they're essential and yet challenging skills to acquire for most. They're crucial in your line of work, and most, and so I'm glad you got the experience and connections you did at Vedamani

  11. 1. Learning at my work placement was more hands. In school you just learn facts and you sit all day but at my placement I got new life experiences that will help me in the future. I enjoyed getting out and working because I learn better doing things not just reading from a textbook.

    2. In my work placement I learned to be more confident. As a teacher you are always meeting new people and talking in front of groups of people. At my placement I learned to do this. Now i feel i will be better doing presentations in front of my classes.

    3. The things i learned in school is how to respect others and work in groups. This is important because if you disrespect people at your work place you could get disrespected back or even fired. Working in groups is also helpful especially for me because I was always working with kids in small groups or big groups.

    4. I took a few things away. One things is that teaching is a hard job but you should always follow your passion to do something no matter what the cost because you want to be happy. I actually learned this from a teacher at Cedar Hills.

  13. The Difference between learning at the work placement and school is that everything that you learn at future shop is hands on. at school we have some hands on learning activities but the rest of it is writing notes and doing work sheets.

    2. something that i learned and bring back to school with me is organization skills. while at future school i have become more organized, this will be handy in school because i can start organizing my binders.

3.somthing that i brought into my work placement from school is knowing how to handle customers. we learned this at the world host.

    2. Something I learned on my work placement that I bring back into school is dealing with kids and adults, and managing my time because often times, I would have a lot of spare time so I would try and find myself work to do to keep myself busy.

    3. Somethings I learnt throughout my years at school that I brought into my work placement are socializing skills, organizational skills, and being committed to finishing my tasks like homework and projects.

    4. From work experience, something I have taken away is how important customer service is as well as managerial skills which is important for Science World.

  15. 1) The learning at my work placement is much more hands-on than a school setting. In school you learn mostly through books and textbooks, but that isn't the case at OWL. Instead, I learned through asking questions. I learned a lot while watching the examinations and I asked a lot of questions when I could.

    2) At my work placement, I learned how much you have to work to truly gain someones respect. When I first got there, we didn't do much, but as I started to work a lot more than other people, I could tell that my supervisors respected my effort. I eventually got way more opportunities thanks to that.

    3) Since I was working with birds, I didn't really need the skills we were taught in World Host like most people. Instead, I brought with me my teamwork skills that we are taught all throughout our schooling. Teamwork is essential when working at OWL, especially when cleaning large cages because it makes it much more efficient when we are all working together.

    4) Thanks to working at OWL, I now know many more things about raptors and how to care for them. I actually learned a lot of veterinary skills like wrapping a wing or injecting drugs into a bird. The stuff I learned will definitely help me in my future career in wildlife rahabilitation.

  16. This is Sukhvir's response, posted verbatim:

    1) The learning process at Future Shop was different from a school setting because the learning at the placement is more hands-on and quick. You have to just learn everything by watching others and be a fast learner. The rest of the staff needs to do their work so you can't slow them down. For example when I first started I was told to clean the store. I didn't ask how I just observed another worker and followed suit.

    2) I have learned that even though you are out of high school there will still be a high school like environment at work with bullying and cliques. However, I have learned some positive things too. Such as, always go with your first thought, never over think anything. I have also learned some organization skills and last but not least I have built up some patience which was needed throughout my placement.

    3) In all the years I have been to school, I have developed math, english and computer skills which I took along with me to my placement. I used these skills many times throughout my work experience. For example, at the Windows 8 launch I used these skills to help setup all the stations and help co-workers as well.

    4) I have taken away many things from my placement. I gained many friends, some referneces as well and lastly I walked with some work experience. I gained experience in the area of customer service and as well as Future Shop on my resume.

    1. Sukhvir, it seems that most of your learning was in independent work. You're absolutely right that in the working world employees and employers expect so state something once and move on. They expect their staff to think for themselves, observe others, inquire if need be, but generally be self-sufficient. How was this? Does this apply to high school as well?

      Delete
  17. 1)I think learning at my work placement was more independent. You have to learn a lot on your own it's different than being in a classroom where you're always being instructed. This lead to me asking a lot of questions and learning from experience.

2)I definitely enhanced my social skills while on my work placement which is a great quality to have for school.

3)I would have to say I benefited from organizational and computer skills that I obtained from school. We didn't do too much computer work but when we did it helped to have those skills.

4)After finishing my placement at Surrey Crime Prevention Society I've learned police radio codes, responsibility and gained volunteer hours that will look great on my resume. My time spent at my placement will have a positive impact on my future.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The working world is much more independent, and it's funny how the small things like organizational skills are so crucial in the working world. School gives you a little taste of all the subjects so you can see what is really for you.

I'm curious, why did you want the Surrey Crime Prevention placement? Are you interested in policing or the legal system? Do you still want to pursue this field?

  19. At school I learn the basic things. In my work placement I pretty much do a lot of hands on job and observe animals behavior. We only read about animals in books but never see them in person. I prefer working alone most of the time because I really don't like when someone ask me a question and I don't know the answer to it.

I learned a lot of cleaning and also getting this done quickly. This what I really need for school :D

My behavior in listing and remembering from school helped me a lot in my work placement. Also the responsibility and the respect helped me with the volunteers.

My love for animals has made me to help them even more and save them. This also gave me the opportunity to know what I must learn and that I need to be even more mature in working in the animal field.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It seems like the learning you experienced was in a sense of maturity and responsibility. That is something you'll carry with you from job to job, from school to career.

Your passion and way with the animals, even the "creepy" ones, was well-executed. You're a natural.
